The Mosby Foundation
The Mosby Foundation strives to ensure that all dog-owning families can adequately care for the unexpected medical needs of their four-legged members, because the quality of life for families includes the quality of life of their dogs.
The Business Challenge
Since 2004, The Mosby Foundation has been a small non-profit with a total paid staff of one (the Executive Director, ED) serving families nation-wide who struggle to afford emergency care services for their dogs. After several Executive Director transitions and the founder no longer involved with the organization, the organization was struggling to balance strategic planning and execution with delivery of its services.
The operating model was making it impossible for the [current] ED, Kelly, to manage the number of requests for assistance while also executing fundraising efforts, technology updates, budget & compliance obligations, and leading the board of directors. The breaking point came when a transition to Google Workspace failed, leaving her without access to email, leaving her at a complete standstill for working with applicants, vet clinics, volunteers, donors, and board members.
The Opportunity
The long-term goal of The Mosby Foundation’s Slow Living Solutions Engagement is to implement a strategic planning and execution model that continues to deliver life-saving services to dog families most in need while:
Establishing an annual fundraising program that keeps Mosby from relying on un-guaranteed grant resources
leveraging digital campaigns and regional area partnerships for brand and cause awareness
Optimizing organizational processes, tools, and systems
The Approach
The findings from Mosby’s initial discovery call outlined several operational areas in need of address. But rather than attempt to “boil the ocean”, Scotti sought to begin her work by addressing Kelly’s most immediate pain points. For the first six months, success was defined as:
Fix the Google Workspace platform so daily operations could proceed
Create efficiencies within the client services process so time could be reallocated to fundraising efforts
IMPROve DATA Management for more strategic communications with donors, volunteers, and clients
Actions Taken:
- Fixed Mosby’s DNS records & set up Mosby’s Google Suite
- Rerouted all outdated email addresses
- Deleted and/or discontinued any email addresses with additional costs
- Researched moving Mosby’s domain to a new provider (we decided to wait until your contract is up for renewal next summer)
- Updated the website’s application form to a google form so that all applications would automatically populate into a single spreadsheet organized and tabbed to math the respective program applied for (rather than having to be manually entered into a separate spreadsheets)
- Implemented a phone screening plan that mitigated receiving calls from people ineligible to receive assistance from Mosby
- Updated admin accounts and set up integrations for PayPal / Network for Good / Quickbooks so that all data syncs across platforms.
- Created an annual review template and a strategic planning document for assessing the organization’s mission and articulating your vision for the next iteration of impact.
- Coached establishing a programmatic plan that outlines Mosby-hosted vents, campaigns, and partnership opportunities (events you participate at but don’t plan and run yourself).
- This parlays into creating a fundraising forecast and operational budget for 2027.
- Made network connections for support with legal documentation and board developent.
Results Delivered:
- Saved 30+ hours per week spent answering phone calls
- A single source of truth that records applications and responses for quarterly and annual reporting of The Mosby Foundation’s impact, the demand for services, and services budget usage/ forecasting
- Ensured data-driven organizational growth by establishing An Annual Review and Strategic Planning Process that sets SMART goals for fundraising, operational expenses, and volunteering.
- Improved compliance reporting by establishing strategic budgeting and forecasting based on YoY programmatic performance.
Next Steps:
Mosby is renewing for 2027 where our focus will shift deeper into donor relationship management for strategic fundraising campaigns and events.
