Setting Organizational Vision: Facilitating a Mission Statement Development Workshop

In 2020, I volunteered as a pro-bono consultant for Pivot Consulting on a project for the Junior Economic Club. I designed and facilitated a board member workshop to help (re)establish the mission statement of the organization. The workshop framework leveraged the purpose-driven concepts of Simon Sinek as part of a five step creative process.

The Business Challenge

The Junior Economics Club of Chicago engaged myself and team of (pro-bono) consultants at Pivot Consulting to help address the stagnating growth of the organization’s membership and devise a marketing acquisition and engagement plan.

The Solution

The organization’s student leadership team met with Pivot weekly for a 3 month engagement to develop their organizational leadership skills, enhance their collaboration efforts, and self-design a marketing strategy they could execute over the next year during their leadership tenure to grow membership and increase engagement, despite shifts due to the 2020 pandemic. 

Actions Taken:

  • Developed marketing best practices survey based on peer organizations
  • Surveyed and interviewed members and alumni on current JEC marketing strategy and member engagement
  • Developed a strategic recommendation for Branding/Messaging, Audience Segmentation, use of marketing channels
  • Lead an interactive workshop with the JEC Student Leadership Committee to prepare them for leadership of the organization during their tenure.

Results Delivered:

  • Student participants demonstrated their learning of marketing and branding concepts by
    • Sharing their personal reflections on what has been meaningful about their involvement with JEC
    • Identifying group common core values
    • Defining 3-5 Organizational Outcomes to drive the purpose of the organization
    • Writing a new Organization Mission Statement using a why/how/what framework
    • Committed to 1-2 Strategic Objectives for each Organizational Outcome
    • Clarifying Roles and responsibilities of BoD members in fulfilling the Strategic Objectives
    • Assessing the organizational assets available for achieving Strategic Outcomes
    • Developing an Action Plan for how to leverage assets to achieve strategic objectives within the selected timeframe
